His service record is definitely held by the MoD: it's listed in their FoI disclosure:

Can anyone explain the attached reference to my grandfather on this item from the 1921 Census.

The SSM will refer to him being a Squadron Sergeant Major.

However not sure about the second part?

& FG 2nd Class Warrant Officer?

Not sure about the FG but WO 2nd class is the rank of Sergeant Major. class one would equate to Regimental Sergeant Major.

Do you have his army records from MoD? What regiment did he transfer to when 5th Lancers was disbanded in 1921?

Army Records lost in a fire!
He transferred to the Ayrshire Yeomanry as an Instructor in 1922.

It was a large amount of WW1 records lost in the fire in WW2, you say your man was in the Army in 1921/2 so his records will still be with the MOD.

See here to apply for his records.

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records

I have sent off an application today, so will have to wait and see. The MOD notes with the application state that it could take up to a year to process the application! !

There are several reasons for the long delay, their primary responsibility is to serving personnel, veterans and the spouses of deceased veterans. Covid19  has caused a huge backlog, partly because so many people with time on their hands during lockdown have used it to research their ancestors, thus a large increase in applications.  Added to that, a lot of the staff working from home, all had a knock on effect.
