What steps should I take next?

Hi all After the release of the 1921 census, I have decided to have another crack at trying to get past my 5x great grandfather, Thomas Chalice (Challis).  Thomas was born in Aldbourne, Wiltshire in 1763.  He died in 1799, leaving behind his wife (Ann Bunce) and children Sally, William, Frances and Thomas (my 4x great grandfather).

I have no idea on how I can get to the 6x generation and where to find details on Thomas's parents.  I have searched all the Wiltshire Parish records I can find, but no luck :/  If anyone could give me some tips on what steps I could take next, I would be very grateful.  TIA, Mark

Have you tried looking for a matching family tree on Ancestry? Or you may get further back on Familysearch.org

Yes, I have looked for matching trees on Ancestry but no luck.  I have also searched Familysearch but can't see any baptism records for Thomas

How do you know for sure that is where he was born?

Have you been through the ones born in other parts of the country? 

I have (thankfully confirmed by wills, marriage licenses and witnesses around the place) a woman who was born in Staffordshire in 1743, married in London in 1767.  Went home for delivery of first child (or at least went back there to have that child baptised there)
But by 1780 they are in Somerset and then to Warminster Wilts. (And still kept in touch with at least one relative in London in 1799)

So, as you cannot easily see your man in Wiltshire. I would see if you can follow those other half dozen forward to eliminate them.

When you get that far back it is more a process of elimination as mckha said.

I did mine before the internet so I did it the old fashioned way by going to the local history library and archives.

Some burial registers can have extra information so they can be a good reference.

There are a number of websites on the 'net' - which gives: English Naming Patterns - one  ca.1700 to ca 1875.

(my Family Tree over the different Centuries carries family names, sometimes there is also another surname added as an extra).  My Grandad & Uncle carried the middle name of BURROWS - which was from generations back, and out of my 6 grandchildren, 4 carry family Christian/Surname names.

(whether this information is exactly correct, I do not know, as various sites give different patterns,

1st Son - Father's Father
2nd Son - Mother's Father
3rd Son - Father
4th Son - Father's Eldest Brother
1st Daughter - Mother's Mother
2nd Daughter - Father's Mother
3rd Daughter - Mother
4th Daughter - Mother's Eldest Sister.

The names would come from the Wife and Husband's line in some cases.

I have a birth, marriage and death entry for Thomas all in Aldbourne, Wiltshire.  I will take a look at the other areas as you suggest and hopefully stumble across something.
