It may help if you can tell us 'where' in Northumberland this was .
Its a fairly big county.

I suspected it may be, but as Gateshead isn't in Northumberland, it's in Co. Durham, I thought I'd ask.

If you have access to Ancestry then the 1902 Kelly's Directory of Durham includes Gateshead and gives a list of the schools

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/1547/images/GB9026P-00185?
That page and the one before it.

I'd say the nearest schools seem to be
RC School St Joseph, Bensham Road
Wesleyan School, Chapel St, just off High Street West
St Mary's Ellison St West

So it may well depend what religion they were.

You will be able to see those schools marked on this map

Oh ,I'm covered in embarrassment . I think it's a case of concentrating so hard on detail that I forget the bigger picture . I expect others will know that experience where you spend too much time on line looking at records and go a bit "snow blind"

Thank you so much for the helpful post and the links .I'm really grateful .

Its ok, I just didn't want to hare off looking at schools in Gateshead and then find out you were looking for schools in maybe Alnwick, Rothbury, Tynemouth etc etc:-)

That NLS map site is well worth bookmarking, they have a wealth of very useful maps - at my favourite price of 'free' :-)

and Tyne and Wear Archives have 'some' school records for Gateshead - you can check their holdings here:
