Just for info a William Charles Walden married an Eliza hooper 1869 Croydon . William died 1878 aged 40 croydon

According to reports of his marriage he was "adopted" by E(dward) Brown of Barnes,Surrey.
On Ancestry 1911 as Harry BROWN b.1903 in Tedington although image says Harry WALDEN.

Thanks everyone for your help. I wondered if there was a family connection to the earlier Eliza Hooper (marriage to William Walden). But she hasn't given father's details on the marriage, so she was probably illegitimate.

So, as yet nothing to shed any more light on Edith's origins.

Martin, The Edith Harriet Walden born Croydon with mmn Hooper  birth was registered in the march quarter of 1879. She may well have been born late in 1878 and registered the following year. Her potential Father William Charles Walden died december quarter 1878 so he may have seen his daughters birth depending on whe he died. Either way I suspect Eliza was pregnant with Edith, and she may never have known his name.

For the record Eliza appears on 1891 census in Croydon with another daughter who cannot be Williams daughter as below.
