Birth in Gourock, 1915
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 14:31 GMT (UK) »
I’m looking for a birth that took place 28 January 1915, in Gourock, Renfrewshire, according to the 1921 census.

The man’s name was Edward Clowes Nicholson, son of Edward Nicholson and Harriet Clowes. This couple lived all their lives, and married, in Sunderland, Co. Durham, and I’ve never been able to find a birth for Edward C. there.

Now this different birth place makes me wonder if he was adopted?  I know it’s a bit of a long shot, but any thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks, Linda

The birth is listed on Scotlands People -- you would need to register and purchase some units. It will only cost 6 units to view his birth certificate.

Unfortunately it's not a subscription site so anyone looking at the birth for you would have to purchase units.
As this was during the war, it maybe that the mother was away from her normal home, staying with relatives - but the address of birth will be shown.

It is shown in Gourock, Renfrewshire.

Possibly coincidence but maybe worth checking out. On the SP Valuation Rolls for 1915 there is an Edward S Nicholson in Royal Street, Gourock (Parish of Inverkip).

In 1911 Census on SP an Edward 'Nicolson' aged 27 in Gourock.

Thank you everyone.  I will get some SP credits.
Will I be able to see the Valuation Rolls using them, as well?
I’m not too familiar with Scottish records.

I have bought some credits and the birth is my man!  I never would have thought to look in Scotland, other than the 1921 census showing that’s where he was born!
Edward Shaul is in the 1911 census as a lodger in Gourock, marine engineer, government worker, torpedo factory. So obviously there for work. He and Harriet marry on Christmas Day 1911, in Sunderland. She is from there so it makes sense. Son Edward is born in Gourock in 1915. I’m pretty sure Edward S. is also the one shown in the Valuation Roll.
By 1921 they are back in Sunderland living with Edwards father (my great grandfather). Sadly Edward is now out of work.
So many thanks to all who helped, and the moral of the story is when searching don’t forget to “broaden your horizons”!
