WW2 UK Orphan sent to South Africa
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 15:43 GMT (UK) »
One of my relatives sadly lost all his family in an air raid in 1941, I've found him on a passenger list to sailing to Cape Town in 1947 but have been unable to find any trace of him after that.
I was wondering if anyone knew if these boys were adopted when they got there and if they possibly had their surnames changed?
Thanks
Paula

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you checked to see if he is shown in any family tree on Ancestry?

What year was he born?  Rootschat has a strict no living persons policy so if there is any chance he could still be alive we have to be careful of any info posted.

I seem to be the only one with him on my tree.

He was born in 1936 so may still be alive and I understand the no living persons rule so wont be posting his name etc just interested if anyone knows if these boys were adopted or just fostered.

As he was so very young still I wonder if he did not come out here to join other, possibly distant relatives.  Who was he living with between 1941 and 1947?

Was he possibly sent out here through the Children's Friend Society?

In the shipping list, who was he travelling with?
Have a look to see if it's a group of children and also search on the name of the person accompanying them. You might be able to link the adult on the ship with a particular emigration society.

Either fostering or adoption would be possible. He might also have changed his name despite not being formally adopted.

Thank you all for your replies, i'm looking in to contacting our local historian to see if they have any information as to what happened and if he would have gone to an orphanage prior to travelling as I can't find out if he was taken in my relatives for a time.
