Calabrian in the Netherlands

Hey everyone, just want to please pick your brains for some advice. Ignatius Mare jongman van Calabrion married in Dordrecht in 1690. He married again, listed as a widow, in the Cape of Good Hope listed as Igance Mare van Calabria in 1706. We have assumed that these two places refer to Calabria in what is now Italy (though open to other suggestions). We have also found a document for him purchasing a house in Dordrecht in 1693 and selling it again in 1696 so he was in Dordrecht till at least that date. In the first purchase he is listed as a shopkeeper.

My question is that I have not found any record of him in Dordrecht prior to his marriage and wish for some advice on any other record sets I can scroll through to try and shed light on when he arrived in the Netherlands and possibly what purpose he had for being there. I am not sure if membership records exist for that early on or applications for burgher status for that time period, as he is listed as one in the deeds of sale.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know whether 1696 is a typo, but that sales document is dated 16 Sep 1697. And - although mum's middle name is wrong - it looks as if a child was baptised on 11 Nov 1697. At least this narrows your timeline with a year.

FYI Unfortunately I haven't been able to find anything earlier than their April 1690 intended marriage registration (for banns) and their actual marriage 3 months later.

Thank you TreeSpirit, the help is much appreciated. Was the child a Catherine or Ignatius by any chance as they are two children that are in the Cape but were not baptised there.

I had seen Ignatius jr and Catherine mentioned in a tree, but Catherine’s baptism would not appear. However I managed to find Ignatius jr and 2 (yet unknown?) children:

I have this marriage record currently for them. Which gives him as being from Calabrion [sic], her from Rees and them both living in Steegoversloot.

I believe that that entry is the ondertrouw/pre-registration (for bans?) on 9 April 1790.

The actual Roman Catholic marriage took place on 9 July 1790.

Ah, thank you, you are a star, I suspected he must have been Catholic prior to coming to the Cape.
