11, The Tunnel, Cardiff
« on: Sunday 16 January 22 20:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I have an ancestor who was living at 11, The Tunnel, which was in St. John's, Cardiff in 1881. I think this refers to the Glamorgan Canal, but does anyone know where it was? I can't see it on any online map, and I assume it is now under the Queen St developments.

Thanks
Squire/Squires (Hereford, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Lancashire, Glamorgan)
Jenkin/Jenkins (Cornwall, Glamorgan, USA (NJ, Pen)
Meredith (Hereford, Radnorshire, Monmouthshire, Breckonshire, Glamorgan)
Evans (Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan, Pembrokeshire)
Harris (Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan)
Brazendale (Lancashire)

What is your ancestor’s name? (plus reference or other details so I can find him/her in the census)

Here is St John’s Church, so your address will be somewhere around about:  :)

Looking at the enumerator’s walk, Tunnel seems likely to be around the Church somewhere. St John St and Working St and the west end of Queen Street are mentioned as being nearby and can be seen on the map.

Directly before number 4 Tunnel is “Queens Place”, which I think might be on, or just off, Queen St but there is not enough detail shown on the map to show these names.

Enumerator’s walk also mentions “ the Tunnel in Crockherbtown” ….

It looks like you need map 15.7, the area around the church and the streets mentioned previously:

which seems to be missing.  :-\

I will investigate further later.

It's marked on the 1851 map found on the link below following the line of the canal underground. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1S-7ujSRKlXUuEjyDncBvNgJNVOvOnDrE?usp=sharing
