Are all recent deaths in the GRO index?
« on: Monday 17 January 22 13:21 GMT (UK) »
Morning All.

One of my interests in the 1961 A6 murder case. The person who was found guilty for this, rightly so, in my opinion, was James Hanratty. He was hanged in Bedford Prison in 1962.

Anyway, one of Hanratty's brothers was called Michael (Mick) Hanratty. Michael was born in 1939 and according to a very reliable source died on 17th January 2020. A family tree on ancestry says he died in Norfolk.

My problem is that I can't find this death in the GRO index (https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/). Am I just being blind or does it take a while for this index to get up-to-date for recent-ish deaths? I suppose it's possible that Michael changed his name to avoid people asking him about his brother, but I don't think that is the case.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can offer.

Rather than GRO why not look for probate ?

I noticed the other day that it was now showing 2020 on its list so I assume they have updated it but having just played with it I can only see quarter 3 & 4 deaths and I was searching Smith.  Think it must be work in progress

I did look for the probate on https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills (is there anywhere else?) but found nothing.

Aha, thanks Rosie! I too noticed that 2020 had only just been added and assumed they'd started at Q1. It looks like they are going backwards as there are a grand total of 3 Smith deaths in Q3 2020 but "lots" in Q4.

Sometimes I find that if I look in the year after death the probate is there.

I have just looked at the Smith births and there is one female in the first qtr, two in the second and then it improves.  Seems mad to me  ::)

Well I don't know how the GRO is recording the 2020 deaths as my husband is not there and he died in the MQ of 2020.  However he is on Find My Past in their death records.

Are the GRO doing them alphabetically, by place or date?  No doubt all 2020 deaths will appear at some point in time.
