Thanks everyone for the help, adding Winifred Ogle and Mary Christine Smith to my family! Looking around I think there is also another daughter Marguerite Smith born in Doncaster in 1931 (same name as Winifred's mother). Another Smith family tree, that also doesn't know who Winifred is, has 3 children, 2 boys and a girl, which doesn't quite match with my 2 girls and a boy, but its all marked private, so I can't see what is going on.

I am suddenly unsure - I think I am as guilty as the people assuming Winifred Ogle died in 1998, with the first Peter Humphrey Smith that I found sufficing. 

The cremation record on ancestry was:

but this makes him 5 years too old, as the Peter Humphrey Smith on the register was born in 1939. This is the one you alerted me to before, born in 1934 in Eton, with mother's maiden name Brooks isn't it.....

No, I don't think that 1939 version Peter Humphrey died in 2012 any longer!  However he must be dead, if his name appears in the 1939 register?  2 other children are redacted out still.

I think I have found Peter - there is a probate record for Peter Humphrey Smith who died 16 March 1968 in 135 Park Rd, Bolton.  In the Civil Death Registration Index, the only Peter H Smith who died 1st quarter 1968, with the death being recorded in Farnworth, Lancashire was aged 28, so a birth date of 1939/1940.  Is this enough to establish I have found him?


In the meantime, with so many Humphrey Smiths floating around, I got nervous that the 1939 Registry entry was even the right Richard Humphrey Smith. So I took your advice and downloaded his birth certificate on ScotlandsPeople, and indeed the birth date agrees with the 1939 Registry. I am glad to report we are not wasting a lot of time on the wrong man entirely...

I too found that probate record yesterday, that’s why I asked the question about the 2012 death as I thought you knew for definite that he was your man. The problem with this probate record is that whilst we know your Peter was born 1939 with mmm Ogle there are at least 12/13 other Peter H Smiths born between 1938/9 any one of which could also be a Peter Humphrey Smith. Sadly the GRO index and Freebmd do not have second Christian recorded past 1934.So in answer to your post “ it could be him or it might not be”
