Load 'em up, Frank!
« on: Tuesday 18 January 22 22:56 GMT (UK) »
I've been having great fun looking at the recent updates to the Marquette County Historical Society photographs.  There are some wonderful ones, including this shot of turkeys being shipped to Chicago for Thanksgiving.  My g-aunt Norma was a Marquette County turkey farmer so there may be some of her birds in that crowd.

Now then, I can see some displaying their full tail plumage ,do both sexes do that or just the males ?
Norfolk is the county in England where Turkey farming used to be most prevalent , the Bronze Norfolk is much prized for flavour ,usually free range .

Those would be domesticated descendants of the wild turkeys I presume.
What a godsend those must have been to the first settlers.

Just a reminder to always check the websites of local historical societies.  They often have photo collections.  Sadly, most of the people in the Marquette County collection are unnamed.  There are several group shots of Civil War veterans which no doubt include gg-uncle John who was an enthusiastic member of the GAR, but I don't know which one he is.

Mr Google suggests, perhaps - Grand Army of the Republic  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Yes, the Grand Army of the Republic, an association of Civil War veterans [only the Union Army, not the Confederacy].

A cousin of my gr grandfather went to America in the 1830s, and several of his sons fought in the Civil War. When I was researching them I found an obituary which included this wonderful line;-
"Yet young Asher was the fifth one of her noble sons on whose patriotic brow she had implanted a loving mother's farewell kiss, and said: "Go! my boy. 'God bless you! Abe Lincoln needs you."
