Ever heard of the West Drayton industrial school?
« on: Monday 24 January 22 09:19 GMT (UK) »
According to a 1907 newspaper article, my gt grandfather was sent to the West Drayton Industrial School (at the age of 17) after committing a crime.

I can't find any record of this institution's existence! There is nothing on Google about it, and I can only find a couple of other newspaper articles that mention it, in the same context of a court recommending a boy be sent there, all in 1907/8.

It must have had another name but I'm at a loss as to what. I've also read that the industrial schools were only for boys up to 16 so curious as to why he'd be sent to one at 17 (his age was known in the article).

Any ideas what school this was?

There was a "Police-court Mission (Boys) Home" at Yiewsley, West Drayton, mentioned in an article in 1913.
Saturday,  Oct. 4, 1913
Publication: The Daily Telegraph

This particular article is about a 17 year old who complained about the facility, though it receives glowing recommendations from the magistrate.

A few other mentions, including an opening after rebuilding in 1906. Called here the "London Police Court Mission Boys' Home, Tadcroft, Yiewsley".
Monday,  Jan. 22, 1906
Publication: The Times

Though I think you can find it as Padcroft Boys' Home. Quite a few hits on google eg:

(sorry, shrink link not working for me  :-\ )

Very interesting, thank you. I've had a Google and this certainly sounds like it was the place.

From Kelly's Directory, 1906 (introduction to the Yiewsley section):

"The Police Courts Mission Home for Boys, under the direction of the Church of England Temperance Society (London Diocesan branch) houses about 40 boys."

That would explain the interventions of the "Missionary" in the 1907-8 press reports
