Help finding parents of Harry Callear (b. 15/08/10) & George (b/d ~1914)
« on: Monday 24 January 22 16:53 GMT (UK) »
I trying to trace the parents of Harry Callear (b. 15/08/10) & George (b/d ~1914)

What I know:
  • Their birth records states the mother's surname as BROOKES
  • There is a 1896 marriage between a Levi Callear (aged ~28) & Catherine Caroline Brookes (aged ~25)
  • 1939 Census: shows Harry (married to Catherine nee. Kelly) AND living with a widow, Catherine Brookes

What I am struggling to find:
  • Mention of Levi and/or Caroline on the census records for 1901 and 1911 - both must be alive as they later have the two boys
  • The death of a Levi Callear - I'm assuming this is pre-1939 (hence Caroline a widow but is it odd that she has reverted to her maiden name?)
Note: In 1911, there is a Harry (aged 1) shown as an inmate at Wolstanton and Burslem Union Workhouse, Turnhurst Road, Tunstall, Stoke On Trent

I've tried relaxing my search but no luck. I'd be very appreciative if someone with better research skills can help/guide.

Levi's wife was Caroline, not Catherine, Brookes.

They are in Denaby, Doncaster in the 1901 census at 106 Annerley Street, with children James Abraham (3) and Levi (4 months). RG13 /4407 page 71 folio 40.

Indexed on Ancestry as CALLIARI

(Ancestry does let you enter the page and folio etc. if you select the census year you want to search first)

Thanks after much head scratching, I had literally just worked that out and found them under "Calliari" (in the 1901 Census)

Caroline Callear is in the Wolstanton and Burslem Union Workhouse in Tunstall in the 1911 census.

The children are also in the workhouse or being fostered in "Scattered Homes", except for James:

James Abraham 1896 -  possibly with William Callear and family in Hanley

Levi 1900 - "Scattered Homes Wolstanton And Burslem Guardians" 18 King Street, Tunstall

Beatrice Maud 1904 - "Scattered Home" Victoria Road, Tunstall

Harriet 1907 - Wolstanton and Burslem Union Workhouse, Tunstall

Harry 1910 - Wolstanton and Burslem Union Workhouse, Tunstall

My reasons for trying to trace this family is that they have descendants who live locally to me (Stoke-on-Trent area) but I cannot (as yet) connect our two branches of the Callear family tree.

Levi is shown as at least living in the Bilston area; while my branch is from the Telford (Wellington) area.

My guess is that Alphonso Callear could be the link. Baptised in Wellington in 1787 to Philip & Elizabeth Callear, living in Bilston in 1841 with wife Rachael and several children including a Levi.
