1939 Register-Bridport area: Puncknowle & Swyre specific
« on: Monday 24 January 22 18:14 GMT (UK) »
I would appreciate some clarity on what has been misunderstood in the transcribing process please.I have used GoogleMaps with the the link below to establish something - SWYRE for starters. There is a West ? on the Register page which I cannot find on a map. Any clues would help fit the history for an evacuated family from London's east end: Helen Rose Parker & son Kenneth.

Hi
Could it be West Bexington, granted it does nt quite read like that but  couple of the house names seem to agree with sold house prices   https://www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/west-bexington.html?page=2
So possibly Beach Road?

Thank you Cath I had seen West Bexington on the last page and in between a fun mis-transcribed: "Labour in Rain" farm for Labour in Vain. Probably a case of enumerator not 'getting' the familiar lilting D-a-w-set accent in those parts. Worth sitting this one out for more postings.

I'm sure West Bexington is correct.

Search the postcode DT2 9DD on this link https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/map-search?clearresults=true
If you zoom in you will see a house called Meadfoot, which is the next on the register after the one in which the Parkers are living.
A few doors away is Cottage by the Sea. which is on the next page in the register.
So the house in question must be in this area I think.
I looks like a lot of the house names have been altered.

Excellent JenB to have found the ancient name of the "Cottage by Sea" is a marvellous conclusion. Thanks for your kind assistance. I just hope the sea itself hasn't crept too much closer to the cottage after 80-odd years!

The house in question on the register was called called 'Baycott'

These photos suggest that this house was perhaps a bit to the north of West Bexington  :-\

There are several references to 'comfortable apartments' at Baycott, Bexington, in 1939 newspapers.

Thank you again Jen, it must have been an enormous relief to get away from the East End to such a wonderful vista these views represent. Albeit something like a couple of miles from the coast - and downhill [last night I ventured on the Google streetview camera car] all the way 'up' from Beach Road through West Bexington. A very steep climb, lovely beach - now, but then no doubt accompanied by barbed wire!

I think now that Baycott might have been one of the large houses on the B3157 above West Bexington, now called Treetops and Sea Fret.

If you go onto streetview you can get a very similar view southwards to that shown in the 'Down to sea from Baycot' photo I linked to previously.

Received Jen, I recall now the streetview passing 'Treetops', however, security etc these days many house signs are either missing or have been blurred-out upon request from the owners'. Strongly tempted though to send a polite letter to current residents just to ask for positive confirmation + of course the 1921 schedule, which of course they may be unaware of. Thanks. Keith.
