Contemporary Attitudes to the 1921 Census
« on: Friday 28 January 22 12:34 GMT (UK) »
One of the reasons why I love looking at newspapers is because they give you a contemporary perspective. I thought it would be fun to see what people thought about the census in 1921. From my research, I discovered that there was a lot of concern surrounding the questions and loss of privacy. You also get a real sense of the scale of the task. Forms were dropped off in the preceding week and then had to be collected on one day, June 20th. The population of England and Wales was close to 38 million so it was a huge achievement to get everybody recorded.

I wrote an article about what I found in the newspapers here, which I hope will be of interest to other members:

Thanks for sharing this. Very interesting . I had to smile at the idea of the Worthing newspaper awarding a prize of a grand piano. If some of my lot had fancied entering the competition, I’m not sure where they’d have put a grand piano if they’d won , in their two rooms housing 7 adults and one teenager, shared yard and shared outside WC.

Most interesting and thought provoking, particularly the section about ages! Thank you for sharing and, given it appears to be your first post here, welcome to Rootschat.
