looking for half sister
« on: Monday 31 January 22 12:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a half sister and I have very little information to go on.
The time is around 1950's and the area is Custom House, East London.
My dad is A L,  born 1930's his parents were Charlie and Emma Lee they lived in Custom House, possibly Maplin Road, they had 4 other children .
The dates are approximated as with the info I've been given that I'm writing here.
The possible year is 1955 or 1956 my dad was dating a girl called S (I have no surname) she lived just off Prince Regents Lane, possibly Argyle Road or Devonshire Road and they got pregnant, her parents (I don't know there names) refused my dad any contact with the baby girl and S went on to marry someone else (I don't know who or how long after the baby was born)
My ancestry DNA hasn't found her.
Is there a way I can search the census records for the street names that list the occupants or is there someone out there that remembers this.
Thanks for all help and considerations.
Jack

Jack, I  can't  help  you at  all but  I  just  hope someone can.

Have  you spoken to any other relatives  who  might  help , other  than  that  if  you have an   inkling of  a surname  the electoral  registers  might help, but it will be  very  time  consuming

The very  best  of  luck

Hi Jack

You may have to wait until the child does her own DNA to get any match.

There are no census records for the period in question - only the 1939 register but as you don't know her parents names or surname - you cannot do any search

Without knowing the name & address of her parents - you can't search Electoral Registers for that period

Even if you lived near that locality - it happened over 65yrs ago so you are unlikely to find anybody still living there who remembers the event

Hi
Ancestry.co.uk has London electoral registers, it is possible to search for a street if you enter it in the "keyword", Argyle road and Devonshire Road are there.
Enter the electoral date and you could enter S* in the "first and middle names"
Would only bring up people old enough to vote though.
I think searching for an unknown name would be too hard unfortunately, with too many results.
Best wishes

I suggested  electrol  registers  because  their  just  might  be  a surname  that  might  come to mind, they  need to ask family members for any recollections,

Hi All thanks for replying

My dad Alfred Lee died in 2015 and my mum in 2019, his sister's, my aunts are the only one's alive that might remember but they say they only knew her first name S.  Unless she does a DNA test I doubt I'll ever find her, I was just hoping someone on her might remember the story.

Hi Jack,

If you have only tested with AncestryDNA so far then you could also try the other main DNA databases. (I've found that different people test with different companies)

Ancestry DNA raw data can be uploaded to:

MyHeritage
FamilytreeDNA (FTDNA)
LivingDNA

There is a unlock fee for each of these companies but it is cheaper than buying 3 brand new tests.

There is also the 23andme autosomal test where it seems most people are testing for health reasons - but you would need to buy a brand new test as they do not accept transfers in.

Good luck with your search.
