Help with photo time period
« on: Monday 31 January 22 19:02 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to identify the vintage of this photograph. Particularly noting the gathered, close fitting sleeves. Also, has anyone seen this "staging" before in family photos?

Hi Kazza56,

If you don't have any luck in this forum, try the "Free Photo Restoration &  and Date Old Photograph", there are a lot of experienced people in there who maybe able to assist you.

You would be best to place this on the photo dating forum, as previously mentioned.
Include the whole photo, without edges and corners cut off, and also include the back of the photo.
Yes, i have seen similar staging before, but can’t help with the date.

Hi kazza

I think it's likely to be late 1870s - early 1880s  but my dating books are packed away. We usually give dating estimates on the Photoboard

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/free-photo-restoration/

Also, as has been suggested, it's best, if possible, to show all of the photo uncropped and the back. Both can give more clues to the date. We do try to give an estimate with whatever you have though  :)

Staging like that helps the person keep still while the photograph is taken.

"Staging like that helps the person keep still while the photograph is taken."

As rustic fences go, though, that one is particularly unconvincing.

Hi Kazza and welcome to RootsChat. I agree with Gadget on date and agree with the need to show the photographer's information, an important dating tool.
