Tadley - Giles Family
« on: Tuesday 01 February 22 14:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am hoping that someone here may be able to provide me with some information about the Giles family who resided in Tadley or a good place for me to start.  My Grandfather (x3) James Giles, is shown to have been born in Tadley. I have been unable to locate his birth records but from what I can tell from a 1879 marriage record and 1881 Census, he would have been born @ 11844 and his was a Sawyer. His father was also a James Giles, unfortunately I can not confirm a mother at this time.  He married a Ellen Catherine Low(e), 31 May 1879 in Camberwell. His marriage certificate states that he was widowed.

One tidbit of information that might help that I have been unable to locate is his middle name.
I am James Francis Giles V, this would lead me to believe that he would be the Sr or 1st for this name sake.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight one might be able to provide.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you tracked him back through the census at all?

In case not, these are possible entries.

1871 - RG10/613/42 p1
4 Dale Street
Wife Rosina b Reading Berkshire
There were no children listed.

She is possibly Rose Ellen Palmer m Dec qtr 1867 Kingsclere RD

1861: RG9/749/28  p 16
Queens Road Reading
James Giles 41 Carpenter b Tadley
Frances wife 40 b Silchester
James 17 Grocer's Porter b Tadley
Hannah 13 b Tadley
Amos 10 Reading
Ellen 7 b Reading
Emily 1 b Reading

1851 5 Brunswick Buildings Reading
HO107/1692/147 p 29
James 31 Carpenter  b Tadley
Frances 30 b Silchester
Mary Ann 9
James 7
Thomas
Hannah
Amos
Ann - 65 visitor b Tadley

1841 HO107/386 Bk 22 7 p 8 Mortimer West End Berkshire
James Giles 20 Carpenter Not born in county
Frances 20 Not born in county

No luck with any birth registrations/baptisms so far, but many births were not registered at this time.  It was not compulsory until 1875.

I'm wondering if the Francis is a nod to the original James' wife - Frances?

Amos was baptised in Reading in 1851 - the occupation of his father ties in as does the address.

Hello,

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

This is a good website for Tadley info.

https://www.tadshistory.com/bmd-mi/#Church%20Baptisms

There is a transcription of James baptism here on page 28,

https://tadshistory.com/TADS/TADSOLD/burials/Tadleybaptisms1775-1846.pdf

Mary is also there on page 26. I can't see Thomas and Hannah but I might have missed them.

There is also other GILES info. to be found but I'll let you have a look around as it's always fun to discover your family yourself :)

Thank you everyone for the quick replies!  I have worked backwards to the best of my ability and had came across the James and Frances (Fanny) Giles family and believed this to have a connection.  I previously had one of those Ancestry DNA tests performed and it led me to some of these individuals as well.  The problem I keep running into is there appears to be several ancestry trees on ancestry.com that tend to sway me away from this. I honestly feel that some of these trees are not accurate at all but there are several (5) DNA hits that both lead to James Giles and Ann Inwood (?) as well as Giles Clark Giles (?) and Mary West all also from Tadley.
