Parish Funded Emigration
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 10:34 GMT (UK) »
I was looking at Stradbroke parish for the Thrower family who were paupers and seemed to disappear in the early 1820s, and in the 1874 White's Directory it said: "The parish sent about 200 paupers emigrants to America from 1831 to 1843."

So I did a search for Stradbroke in the TNA catalogue and it found lots of information about Lord Stradbroke - however, this description of a letter dated 17 July 1844, reference MH 12/489/188 was interesting:

Thanks tvc

In the pictorial book of mid Suffolk, it mentions the Suffolk paupers were embarked from Wherstead, just outside Ipswich.  Just how many of them were expected to survive the journey would be interesting to know.
