Horrible death in Dunkirk - John Carlyle Allen, d.1930
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 20:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, mystery surrounds this man and his death. John "Jack" Carlyle Allen was born 1880 in Liverpool. He was a writer for Longmans Green and Co and worked in India for a time. Went to war and had a mental breakdown. Following his divorce from his first wife in 1926, he married Flora Scott, his children's governess in 1927 and moved to Dunkirk. She abandoned him and he was later found dead 18 March 1930, as the family stories go, "lying in a pool of his own blood". Is there anywhere that I could find a Dunkirk death record, or order a death certificate? There was apparently an inquest but I don't know where to look for such things.

That's probably from my tree. This is information that I was told, but I want to actually see the records to confirm, because my family is notorious for hiding things about this man. Also I would really like to see the inquest. Do these records still exist?

His death cert probably still exists but I don't know about inquest reports

How did you establish his actual death date?

I got his death date from his probate which confirms he died in Dunkirk.

Notice for probate here, but I can't find a mention of the inquest in the British papers.
