Think I've found Thomas snr's certificate from 1854 which lists his service record. Born 2 December 1815. Went to sea as an apprentice in 1826.

In the vital period of the 1840s he's on ships plying their trade out of Newfoundland, central and south America

He gives an address at 19 Mercer Court, Red Cross Street, but where that is I'm not sure. He's asked for his certificate to be sent to Liverpool

This sounds possible.  But I think my GGF came to America in 1849 with his Mom and Dad, Thomas Hamon and Caroline Cooper.  At least, this makes the most sense at the moment as I can't find any other records of a James Hamon immigrating in those years.

I was more thinking about where James  might have been born. He's not baptised in Jersey, and other children of Thomas and Caroline were (Thomas Henry was even baptised on a return visit to Jersey from the USA). I was wondering if the family were travelling on ships with Thomas, especially given he was a ship's master by then and James was born at sea or somewhere along the East coast of the American continent where his father was plying his trade

This is an interesting idea and would explain why no record of the birth.

I do not have James Sr. marriage certificate.

I couldn’t find one either  on Anc*y or F M P or family search :-\

I forgot that there was mention of a public tree - no marriage details given there either for James & Delia marriage

You may have this information already but posting just in case

Yes, thank you.  I have looked for these details for years w/o luck, very frustrating.I also have a newspaper search subscription and can't find more information there although I have found some interesting stories about their life together.  I have Ancestry and the public tree is mine I think - Elizabeth Hamon

MANY thanks for looking for me!

There is a passenger list at Ellis Island dated 1849 with Thomas, Caroline, James (aged 2) and Thomas (aged 3 months) on the Typhis from Jersey. Thomas's occupation is given as a mariner.

Stewart

Hello Stewart - Thank you for this.  I have signed into Ellis Island search, but can't find this record.  Can you send me the link to this site?  Thank you so much!  Elizabeth
