George French
« on: Saturday 05 February 22 16:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I’m getting really muddled trying to find out about my great grandfather and I’ve had such great help in the past I thought i’d ask here!
Unfortunately, George died when his daughter (my grandmother) was very young so we know nothing about him. My grandmother ended up in an orphanage and never discussed her past. Anyway with help from members here I managed to find his death certificate. He died in a workhouse in Southwark in 1929 and his age in listed as 42 and he was listed as a head plateman. It’s definitely him as his wife was the informant.
He married Annie Wilkins in 1924 in Southwark and his age is listed as 41. This is obviously different to the age on his death certificate, but again it’s him as his wife is correct. He’s listed as a hotel cook. His father is listed also as George French and listed as a collier and was deceased.
I found a birth for a George French with a father also George listed as a coal miner in 1883 in Oldbury Worcs. I’ve always assumed this to be him but now I’m really not sure! I tried looking up a George French born in 1883 and 1887 and there were hundreds of results, I don’t even know where to start! I wonder if anyone could shed any light and maybe see things I’ve overlooked (which is quite often the case!)
Many thanks in advance for any help

The writing is so hard to read but it looks like Eugene George (something ending …egan) and w Barber. Both names I don’t recognise

Oh yes that could be it! Am I allowed to take a photo from a birth certificate? I’m not sure if that’s permitted or not?

Oldbury George (place of birth Langley) is living in Worcestershire in 1921, but had a period in Yorkshire before WWI where he is to be found in 1911, occupation collier, and spending a few days in prison in 1913, I think for being drunk.

Oh dear! Thank you very much for that! I knew he was in London from 1924 at least but I always suspected he moved there from somewhere else!

If that is correct then he died in 1926 age 48 Lambeth reg district.  I just picked that suggestion up from BMD indexes searching Eugene G with *gan in the surname
