Just a quick update to say 'thank you' Maureen

That birth is him!  :D  William Herbert Adams Quartley born 26 May 1880 at 32 Mortimer Street London.  Mum is down as May Quartley (Maria uses May as well and when she married Frederick Scotter she styled herself as Lady. May Scotter - Frederick inherited his father's knighthood).

Interestingly the birth was not registered until 6 August 1880 and Dad is blank.

I wonder if Mortimer Street was a nursing home or something?!

1881 - It's worth noting, George Adams 42 (b c1839) was a 'Drill Instructor R.V.'

It may be worth posting a query on the Armed Forces board to enquire what it means?

Ellen was widowed bet. 1881 - 1891 & there's these deaths on SP (age slightly out)?...

ADAM GEORGE D 46 - 1883 - 021/MR 408 Marine Register (b c1837)

&

ADAMS GEORGE 46 (b c1836)
WALLACE (mms)
1882 - 692/2 645 Leith South

1881 - George & Ellen have a son named George William Adams (b c1877) Glasgow (of course this may be wrong going by the info. for William)?

Possibly his birth, if registered early in the following year (names reversed)?...

ADAMS WILLIAM GEORGE 1878 - 644/12 252 Gorbals (Glasgow)

This George appears to have an added middle name of 'Ross' later in life? (mms possibly)?...

His Attestation Papers are available on ancestry...
Canada, World War I CEF Attestation Papers, 1914-1918 as Geo Wm Ross Adams
Birth date given as 13 Nov 1876!

He's also noted here (downloadable excel sheet bottom of page) then scroll to no. 3460 for details...

Hi Ruth,

Thanks so much for putting up the details on the birth cert. :)

Not that it helps-I think the 1881 inhabitants  of 32 Mortimer were Car(e)l A FERRY ( a tailor) with wife and quite a few lodgers.

Maureen

Thanks Annie for all of that information  :)

George William Ross Adams isn't this William.  He's another baby the Adams' took in -he was the son of a singlewoman, Elizabeth Ross. I managed to get his birth reg off SP.  It is interesting though to see what happened to him if he was brought up alongside William Bryce/Adams. Got to wonder if they kept in touch with each other!

I wonder if the RV is the Rifle Volunteers....

No problem at all  :)  I'm very grateful you found him!

You beat me too it as well, I was going to see who was living at No. 32 in 1881 just in case it showed up as a nursing home or women's home or something. Of course, it could be fake address as well ???.

I'm wondering if she slipped Adams into the name as she knew he was going to the Adams' or indeed as it took from May to August to register him, he was already there.  Finding where the Adams' were from in England might help too but all I've got so far is that they were from England.

Too many questions!  ;D
