GRO index problem
« on: Monday 07 February 22 12:04 GMT (UK) »
I have an entry which is show in the old style typed indexes, but not in the new GRO indexes.

I am pretty sure it must be correct
The entry is John A Pullen born Jun qtr 1922 in Croydon

I ordered this from GRO knowing it might not come.

Sure enough it could not be found.

One one birth of Pullen with Mn of Ruddle shows up

There were apparently two children of this marriage ( per my aunt , and the other is in the 1921 Census but apparently not registered)

William Henry Pullen married Maragaret Fisher nee Ruddle in Jan qua ter 1917. She had been widowed in WW1.

I will count his birth in my tree but it is frustrating not to able to trace him in 1939 as I have no birth date.
Douglas, Varnden, Joy(i)ce Surrey, Clarke Northants/Hunts, Pullen Worcs/Herefords, Holmes Birmingham/USA/Canada/Australia, Jackson Cheshire/Yorkshire, Lomas Cheshire, Lee Yorkshire, Cocks Lancashire, Leah Cheshire, Cook Yorkshire, Catlow Lancashire

Do you mean this index? It only shows to 1921.

Your birth shows on Free BMD but presumably you have seen that. There is also an entry for John A Taylor with the same mother’s name and reference.

I had somehow failed to spot the Taylor entry
It is possible Margaret had a child John by aTaylor.
William HenryPullen was by this stage institutionalised withmental issues.

His first unregistered daughter Winifred was similarly institutionalised ina ‘Colony for mental defectives’ , how that name grates.
She did however apparently leave, marry and have a son

I was just trying to trace John, and his mother.
Winifred would have been a first cousin of Dad. John too is his father was the same.
A sad case with two children of Margaret’s first married losing a father to WW1 and a step father to mental illness

Taking a guess, I would say the father is named as XXX TAYLOR and the mother is Margaret PULLEN formerly RUDDLE.  That would be why the old indexes have it as both TAYLOR and PULLEN - the parents' surnames were not the same.

That’s good news. I checked GRO and it states 1921 but must be updated.   :)
