A women's football team was in Tyneside-set series of the long-running drama "Home Front" on Radio 4. Many players were munitions workers.

Hi Maiden Stone,

Yes, that is right, the local women in the munitions factory played in teams against each other.  Teams included ones from Blyth, Wallsend Slipway and Elswick.
They raised money for charity but sadly it seems after the war a quash was put on things and they were not allowed to play anymore.
I have attached a link which shows some photos and information about it.
Incidentally, some of the Newcastle Battista girls, mentioned on the long running Battista thread were munitions workers and keen football players.  I believe one was quite a star player!

JenB they looked like tough lasses.
An episode of "Home Front" was about the international match between England and Ireland at Christmas 1917.

Apparently, the speaker has a play which is going to be performed soon ..

'Wor Bella' .. if you are an ex-miner you can get a free ticket. :)

I think on the photo 'wor Bella' and co, certainly look like a formidable force to be reckoned with.  I wouldn't fancy my chances against that lot. ;) ;D
