18 Covent Gardens was the address I had on Louis's enlistment for Him, Mary & Gerald in 1904

Louis's Army enlistment in 1904

Any addresses for next of kin?

There was a Thomas H Dodd receiving an army pension on17 April 1879. He was a viewer? In R S A factory

RSA ought to be Royal Small Arms Factory.
It says Thos H Dodd was age 57 on retirement.

A possible?
Thomas Henry Dodd in Aston in 1871. Piece 3147 folio 75 page 52.
Age 48, Gun Maker, born Birmingham.
Wife is Louisa, born Bow, London.
Children born in Essex, Jersey, Dublin, Pimlico, and Aston.

He and his family are still in Aston in 1881.

His son Thomas J Dodd, and his daughter in law are with him.
Says Thomas junior born in Pimlico, rather than Dublin!

There's a death of a Thomas Henry Dodd in Aston in 1892. Age 65, which is rather lower than in the other records.

Are you saying that Thomas H Dodd was married before he married Mary McMillan. And then had  another family with her and that they are one and the same.
Or is that a different one..

Samsscraps,
You have to start with Gerald Harcourt Dodd...since he is your direct link.
Parents Thomas H Dodd and Mary McMillan.

Mary, being a Catholic, would have married Thomas, a widower,
especially since all the children were baptised catholics.

It is possible they married in Ireland unless  she was brought over as a child or  came ,as many did, to take up domestic  work in England.
Have you followed through  George and Ellizabeth Harcourt Chaplain.?
Were they from Ireland.?
And what connection is Margaret McNully.?

Hi
I was just having a stab at identifying the Thomas H Dodd in that pension record. The one who "retired" in 1879.

The Royal Small Arms Factory was in Enfield, but Birmingham was an important place in gun making and there seems to have been some government connection in the 19th century.
So I am thinking that the Thomas in Aston, who had been in the army, ended his military "service" in a factory there, as a viewer.
His age seems right.

I don't think the chap in that pension record looks like the same person Mary has as the father on the children's birth certificates.
There are other Thomas Dodds in the army pension records (but no Thomas Henrys?)

Yes. I see.
I was doing the same...trying to go through the Thomas Dodd s who were in army...but there are so many.
There were both Dodd an d  Mcmillan families s in areas of Ireland....but also in Liverpool and other areas of England
Many Irish emigrating went  first to
 Liverpool.
Cannot find a Mary  J McMillan marrying aThomas Dodd in Liverpool  though..
It seems no Irish naming pattern used for the children.

Thank you I have seen this family but I don't think it is my Thomas.

I have all the kids birth records & Gerald is my Great Grandad. It is possible Thomas has another family & I have thought of it but I cannot find any records that lock that possibility in for me yet.

I feel like some of the records I am searching for may not be available online yet>

I did find another record for Thomas Dodd in the Army but I was going cross eyed looking at all the records & lost my spot but noted a few service numbers that sort of fit.

I get what Jon65 is saying as I have thought that too as one of my Boatwright ancestors had a similar situation but I was able to find evidence of both families, I'm feeling like the records that will confirm what I am searching for are not yet online but I will get there I may just have to take a break until something more is available as I won't be going to England anytime soon

Samsscraps,
You have to start with Gerald Harcourt Dodd...since he is your direct link.
Parents Thomas H Dodd and Mary McMillan. Yes, I have been starting with the facts I have

Mary, being a Catholic, would have married Thomas, a widower,
especially since all the children were baptised Catholics. Yes, that's why I think its strange that cannot find a certificate or bann or anything but I was reading that not all of records from St.Marys have been transferred online yet & I think as that's where Elizabeth was baptised they possibly got married there as well. Most of my families have been married & baptised at the same church so far & I am thinking they were both possibly widowers with Mary marrying either a man called Williams or McNally as I have found some records for bot that possibly fit

It is possible they married in Ireland unless  she was brought over as a child or  came ,as many did, to take up domestic  work in England. Yes, have found a few domestic workers named Mary McMillan & also Dodd that fit
Have you followed through  George and Ellizabeth Harcourt Chaplain.? At this stage I think they may have just been neighbours/friends as I cannot find a family link to them or the Crowe family. George was born in Luton & Elilzabeth was born in Surrey. The Crowe family were from Ireland
Were they from Ireland.?
And what connection is Margaret McNully.? I cannot access that actual record to view, but I think it may possibly be a name typo as I have found a record of Mary McMillan married to a William McNally in Ireland in 1868. I had another record like that with a typo in the name that was mistranscribed but without actually viewing the original I don't want to rule it out for the moment. I believe that either Thomas or Mary or both were widowers hence my problem finding a marriage between Dodd/McMillan. One of my other ancestors was using her new married name everytime she remarried & another used her maiden name so I am trying to think broadly before disregarding anything
