Service Number in the Notts & Derbys Regment
« on: Thursday 10 February 22 13:03 GMT (UK) »
I have a soldier who states on his Marriage Certificate (1919) that he had served as a Private in the Notts & Derbys Regiment.

His Service Number is given as 3673A, which looks a bit strange.

I can't find any mention of this guy in the official record, so I presume that he served late in the War and never went overseas.

Does anybody recognise the Service Number, or have any idea when he would have served ?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Ignoring the letter "A" for the time being 3673 gives an attestation date
of 1892 & into the Regular Btns. so assuming he's not that old.
The TF were formed in 1908 but their numbers don't go into the 3000's
going into the war.
It looks to me to be an error & "A" should be another number.
Have you got a name & age?

Thanks for replying, Jim.

Soldier is John DURKIN.
Born Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire, 1 Feb 1898.

He worked in a Shipyard, so I suspect he may initially have been in a Reserved Occupation.

I was thinking this could be 267316 John Durkin.  He lived in Middlesbrough. But he was discharged wounded in 1918.

That's him!

His future in-laws were living at 24 Farrer St in the 1921 Census.
Which is the address given on his Pension record.

Thanks very much for the pointer, Jim.

Any idea how 267316 could have been distorted into 3673A ?
I wouldn't have even thought of making that link.

Teeside Weekly Herald 21st July 1917
Mr & Mrs J Durkin of 4 Bulmer St, Middlesbrough, have recieved news of their son, Pte.John Durkin (Notts & Derby Regt.) has been wounded and is now in hospital.

His parents are John and Annie and he has at least one sister Mary.(report of Marys death.)

Mistranscription. If the marriage certificate came from GRO it is most likely a transcribed copy.

He was wounded in early July 1917 while serving with 2/7th Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters), per the battalion casualty list dated 5 July.

Yes, that's him in the newspaper article.
