Records of the Union Workhouse, Lambeth, Surrey 1870s
« on: Thursday 10 February 22 21:19 GMT (UK) »
My 3rd great-granduncle Thomas William Roberts baptised on 26 July 1812 at St Olave Bermondsey, Surrey, was in the Union Workhouse Lambeth in the 1871 census:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/7619/images/LNDRG10_668_669-0323?pId=2408102

I understand from family folklore that his family was Welsh, but I don't have proof and am trying to work out if this is true.

His parents were John and Ann Roberts and I have researched their children born between 1807 and 1823 and baptised at St Olave Bermondsey.

I think that a settlement examination for Thomas is the only way to find out more, but I can't find one for a Thomas Roberts with details of the origins of his parents John and Ann Roberts.

However I have found this from 21 November 1870 in the London, England, Poor Law and Board of Guardian Records, 1738-1926 for Lambeth in Rough Settlement Examinations, 1869-1871:

Does anyone please know the Lambeth workhouse records better than me who might know where to find more information?

Thank you very much,
Jon

Not what you asked specifically but do they appear in the 1841 census (or later) to see if born outside the County?

I haven't found them in the 1841 census.

John and Ann Roberts had the following children baptised in St Olave Bermondsey:

Ann Roberts|Hubbard
1807–1847
(MY ANCESTOR)

Jane Roberts
1809–?1826

Robert Roberts
1810–

Thomas William Roberts
1812–aft 1871

Elizabeth Roberts
1814–

George Roberts
1816–1817

George Roberts
1818–1819

George Roberts
1820–1821

Harriet Roberts
1823–1823

The baptisms of their children show he was a calenderer (a textile industry worker, passing cloth through heavy rollers to give a smooth, pressed finish to the woven fabric) or a calenderer AND glazer.

(There was also another John and Ann Roberts in the area who had a son Samuel baptised in 1816 but this John was a Labourer of Melior Street.)

My ancestor Ann Roberts|Hubbard (1807-1847) married Henry Hubbard on 23 September 1826 at St Mary Newington, Surrey. Their children were:

Henry John Hubbard
1827–1888

Ann Elizabeth Hubbard
1829–?1830

George William Hubbard
1831–1904

Thomas Richard Hubbard
1833–1912

Martha Jane Hubbard|Gilham|Bray|Hayes
1835–1922

Emma Clara Hubbard|Allison
1838–1929

Mary Hubbard|Goodey
c1841/3–1912

Louisa Hubbard
1844–1846

I originally saw my ancestor Ann Roberts as being the one baptised in 1807 as daughter of John and Ann Roberts in an ancestry tree and so took this with a pinch of salt.

However looking into this, her address on 8 August 1827 at the baptism of her son Henry John Hubbard was given as Stoney Street, Southwark St Saviour, Surrey. There is a burial of a Jane Roberts aged 18 on 12 July 1826 at St Saviour Southwark also with the address of Stoney Street. This I suspect is Ann's younger sister and so the two families perhaps lived together in Stoney Street.

Furthermore, while looking for what happened to Ann's daughter Ann Elizabeth Hubbard born on 4 July and baptised on 26 July 1829 (she is not with the family in the 1851 census and I have never found the Hubbards in the 1841 census), I came across this non-conformist burial, which seems to be her:

Ann Hubbard of Richardson Street, Bermondsey, Surrey, aged 10 months 6 days at New Ground, New Street, Parish of St John Horselydown, Surrey on 2 May 1830.

Looking at the same burial ground, I then came across this burial:

John Roberts of Richardson Street, Bermondsey, Surrey, aged 53 years at New Burial Ground [non-conformist], New Street, Parish of St John Horselydown, Surrey on 15 April 1830.

As this burial lists the same address as Ann Hubbard, it looks like this could be John Roberts still perhaps living with his daughter and her family. If so, he died before the 1841 census. But I have not found anyone who could be his wife Ann Roberts yet.

I hope this all makes sense?

Thanks for replying,
Jon

Hello I am just revisiting my Roberts family and seeing if I can get any further and on re-reading this post, I see that the links are no longer working.

The records I was looking at for Thomas Roberts are:

London, England, Selected Poor Law Removal and Settlement Records, 1698-1922 > Lambeth > Settlement Papers > Rough Settlement Examinations, 1869-1871

Index for the 1869 to 1871 volume is here: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2651/images/31952_a013189-00022?ssrc=&backlabel=Return

The short mention in the volume about Thomas Roberts is here: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2651/images/31952_a013189-00267?ssrc=&backlabel=Return

Sadly it does not mention his family's origins, but hopefully something will emerge in future.

Jon

The only Thomas Roberts I can find 1871 in Lambeth Union Workhouse is the following

Thomas Roberts 61 widower Boat Builder born Southwark.

Is this the man you are needing information on?

Hello yes this is him. I am descended from his sister AnnRoberts|Hubbard (1807-1847).

It was stated that her family was Welsh and this was passed down over generations, but of course I need to see if I can prove this is true and that this is not a broken telephone.

I had hoped that the settlement of her brother Thomas William Roberts might mention his father's origins.

What I know about Thomas William Roberts:

Birth
21 April 1812 • Bermondsey|Southwark, Surrey, England
Son of John and Ann Roberts.

Baptism
26 July 1812 • St Olave Bermondsey, Surrey

Assumed death of father John Roberts(c1776–1830)
bef 15 April 1830 • Bermondsey, Surrey, England, aged 53 years

Marriage to Mary Ann Tharme|Roberts
18 July 1831 • St Mary Lambeth, Surrey
He was a minor. Witnesses: Ralph Tharme & James Longman Gawler [church official]. Neither parent gave consent, so assume they were both dead.

Occupation
30 March 1851 • Carpenter
(1851 census.)

Residence
30 March 1851 • 7 Queen Head Court, Lambeth, Surrey
Relationship: Head

Occupation
2 June 1856 • Scale Board Cutter
(Son's marriage.)

Residence
7 April 1861 • 4 Great Lemon Court, Lambeth, Surrey
Relationship: Head

Settlement Examination
21 November 1870 • Lambeth, Surrey
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2651/images/31952_a013189-00267?ssrc=&backlabel=Return. Perhaps there is an earlier settlement in the parish for him.

Occupation
1871 • Boat Builder
(1871 census.)

Residence
1871 • The Union Workhouse, Lambeth, Surrey

Death
aft 1871 • Surrey, England (assumed)

Thank you,
Jon
