His parents were John and Ann Roberts
Not what you asked specifically but do they appear in the 1841 census (or later) to see if born outside the County?
I haven't found them in the 1841 census.
John and Ann Roberts had the following children baptised in St Olave Bermondsey:
Ann Roberts|Hubbard
1807–1847
(MY ANCESTOR)
Jane Roberts
1809–?1826
Robert Roberts
1810–
Thomas William Roberts
1812–aft 1871
Elizabeth Roberts
1814–
George Roberts
1816–1817
George Roberts
1818–1819
George Roberts
1820–1821
Harriet Roberts
1823–1823
The baptisms of their children show he was a calenderer (a textile industry worker, passing cloth through heavy rollers to give a smooth, pressed finish to the woven fabric) or a calenderer AND glazer.
(There was also another John and Ann Roberts in the area who had a son Samuel baptised in 1816 but this John was a Labourer of Melior Street.)
My ancestor Ann Roberts|Hubbard (1807-1847) married Henry Hubbard on 23 September 1826 at St Mary Newington, Surrey. Their children were:
Henry John Hubbard
1827–1888
Ann Elizabeth Hubbard
1829–?1830
George William Hubbard
1831–1904
Thomas Richard Hubbard
1833–1912
Martha Jane Hubbard|Gilham|Bray|Hayes
1835–1922
Emma Clara Hubbard|Allison
1838–1929
Mary Hubbard|Goodey
c1841/3–1912
Louisa Hubbard
1844–1846
I originally saw my ancestor Ann Roberts as being the one baptised in 1807 as daughter of John and Ann Roberts in an ancestry tree and so took this with a pinch of salt.
However looking into this, her address on 8 August 1827 at the baptism of her son Henry John Hubbard was given as Stoney Street, Southwark St Saviour, Surrey. There is a burial of a Jane Roberts aged 18 on 12 July 1826 at St Saviour Southwark also with the address of Stoney Street. This I suspect is Ann's younger sister and so the two families perhaps lived together in Stoney Street.
Furthermore, while looking for what happened to Ann's daughter Ann Elizabeth Hubbard born on 4 July and baptised on 26 July 1829 (she is not with the family in the 1851 census and I have never found the Hubbards in the 1841 census), I came across this non-conformist burial, which seems to be her:
Ann Hubbard of Richardson Street, Bermondsey, Surrey, aged 10 months 6 days at New Ground, New Street, Parish of St John Horselydown, Surrey on 2 May 1830.
Looking at the same burial ground, I then came across this burial:
John Roberts of Richardson Street, Bermondsey, Surrey, aged 53 years at New Burial Ground [non-conformist], New Street, Parish of St John Horselydown, Surrey on 15 April 1830.
As this burial lists the same address as Ann Hubbard, it looks like this could be John Roberts still perhaps living with his daughter and her family. If so, he died before the 1841 census. But I have not found anyone who could be his wife Ann Roberts yet.
I hope this all makes sense?
Thanks for replying,
Jon
