Jane Law b. abt. 1775 who are her parents
« on: Friday 11 February 22 11:22 GMT (UK) »
I need help in finding Jane Laws mothers full name. She married Peter Cato b. 1774 on the 26 Nov 1799, Church of Whitby, York
She was Christened on the 25 Feb 1776 in Whitby, Yorks. Father's name Thomas Law and mother Ann.
Info found on Ancestry.Uk.-England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 and Family Search.

My problem is that there are a lot of Thomas Laws married to Ann's but do not know which couple is the one I want. I found a tree on Ancestry that had Ann Borrough as the spouse and some other tree with Ann Hurtely. And others with no surname at all for Ann.
The other problem is Jane Law is also know as Jane Eskdale with parents as John Eskdale and Ann Borrough.

The marriage was on 30th November 1799, the licence was dated 26 Nov 1799

Anns baptism notes that Thomas is a Farmer and it looks as though his abode is probably Aislaby.
There are a couple of other baptisms at Whitby with parents Thomas and Ann that also mention Aislaby - Hannah (1768) & Robert (1773)

Thanks Rosie. I think you are on the right trek- a tree for them on Family Search - https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/MGG6-Y5M.

But still not mothers surname. Where would you say I should look for her surname?

The marriage to Ann Huntley gives the occupation of that Thomas Law as 'Maltster'

You can only look at all available marriages and decide which you think is correct.

The tree that mentions Ann Borrough has no mention of the surname Law as parents for Jane

I've found Probate records can be a great help in sorting out relationships. These can be obtained from The Borthwick Institute (part of the university of York). They are indexed by FindMyPast.

But before you do that have a look at Dave KING's site. http://www.davekinggenealogy.co.uk
Search for any surname you know which has connections to your family.
