I'm going to try & answer everyone at once here:

I'm ok with Christopher's searching thanks, have already found records for him on the Libraries & Archives Canada site, no problems there, this information was only provided to enable fresh eyes to trace correct the family back

I found Barlow on Christopher's marriage entry to his second wife

There is no supporting evidence that his mother was Alice Barlow.

The 1891 has them incorrectly indexed as Baguley as they were living  in the Baguley household

Using GRO online shows 12 Hough births all with mmn Sandbach between 1874 & 1898.  Several of those children - including Christopher - appear on the censuses with Alice

I note that one child b 1876 was called Henry Barlow Hough.

Alice Sandbach was illegitimate - she is with grandparents in 1861.  Baptism shows her mother as Elizabeth who is on the 1861 entry

May be more than a coincidence but in 1871 Alice Sandbach is a servant to 45yr old widow Jane Barlow whose late husband was Henry

I gave a full reply yesterday but it doesn't appear to have all come through from looking below. Barlow as Alice's maiden name came from 2 Canadian documents found on the LAC site showing details of both of Christopher's marriages, in each case he had to give his parents' names & Barlow was entered as his mother's maiden name. As this was the first evidence I'd found for his parents names, I used that in good faith. I had also looked for marriages between John Hough and Alice..., had seen the Sandbach one but at the time dismissed it as a possible transcribing error with Sandbach being in Cheshire. Having read the various comments posted here yesterday, I had a fresh look on FindMyPast & concur with what you've told me. There is obviously some connection to the Barlow family somewhere along the line but not as a marriage. Interestingly, on Alice & John's marriage entry, she has a father listed as James (Sandbach) even though her mother had her outside of marriage, her grandfather was also called Richard & no evidence of a brother to Elizabeth called James
I haven't gone into the censuses in any depth yet
Thanks for your help, hopefully this full reply will post

Henry Barlow aged 45 died Northwich 28.7.1870.  Wife Jane Buckley Barlow was sole Executor.

1848 marriage in Liverpool - Jane Buckley Rhodes to Henry Barlow

Census entries show no children - Henry was a butcher.

You may want to consider downloading a copy of Henry’s will.  If he was Alice’s biological father he may mention her in his will.  For £1.50 it may (or may not) solve the mystery  ??? ???

Just in case there is a connection - his marriage was 4.9.1848 @ St Helen. Sefton Merseyside.  Both were full age.  She is shown as of Sefton & he of Northwich Cheshire.   - his occ was Butcher

Respective fathers were Thomas Barlow - Butcher  & William Rhodes Excise Officer

Witnesses John Barlow & William & Maria Rhodes

Thanks Carole, for Christopher to think his mother's maiden name was Barlow there has to be some specific significance with this family, I'll dig around a little deeper now

There is a definite connection - 1891 census for Jane Buckley Barlow shows a 16yr old niece Jane Beatrice Hough.  Jane Beatrice Hough b 1874 - mmn Sandbach

Jane Buckley Barlow died 21.12.1893.  One of her executors was John Hough - waterman

Just in case you end up pursuing the Barlow line - the 1841 reference is:
