Cuthbert Winship - Ulgham
« on: Monday 14 February 22 14:07 GMT (UK) »
I’d like to find out more about my 4 x g grandfather, Cuthbert Winship.  I don’t know when or where he was born or died, but thanks to freereg and an Ulgham genealogy site, this is what I do know.

1784 – Marriage to Sarah Carr at Ulgham
1786 – Bap of son, Cuthbert at Ulgham
1789 – Bap of daughter Margaret (1789 – 1793) at Ulgham
1790 – Sarah dies
1791 – Cuthbert marries widow Isabel Hudspeth (nee Robson)
1792 – Bap of son John (1792 – 1795)
1794 – Bap of son, Robert
1796 – Bap of daughter Mary
1799 – Bap of son John (my 3 x g grandfather)

In 1798 Cuthbert volunteered for Posse Comitatus.  I wondered if this would give any details of his birthdate or place of birth?  Does anyone know how I would be able to access this document?

Thank you
Chris

I'd try Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn. I put Northumberland Posse Comitatus into a search engine and came up with this blog post.
https://www.northumberlandarchives.com/2021/06/04/men-and-carts/

Though that suggests that a name search in the catalogue should bring up a result and I am failing to get any results for Winship, but don't know if the project has been completed.
Worth a shot at asking the archivists, but I'd doubt these records would provide the sort of detail you are looking for.

Thank you Boo for that information.
Very interesting comments about the volunteers transcribing the information. I'll try and contact Northumberland Archives to see if I can find out more

That's interesting Among. The first date I have for him is 1784 when he married Sarah Carr. I'll investigate tomorrow and see if I can find out any more about the Northumberland Militia and Lt Col Bell

Thank you

Well, I haven't found out much more about Cuthbert Winship but I've learned loads of interesting facts about the Northumberland Militia and the role of the army in the American War of Independence which was going on at that time.  Really enjoyed reading about it all
Thank you both  again for your help

Have you tried the Northumberland Records Office?

Few I found by typing Winship into the search line

Letter to Ralph CARR from John CARR, re: Bond -Mr. Redhead, Mr. Patterson, Mr. BELL, and Mr. WINSHIP. Date 14 November 1801
Ref : ZCE/F/1/3/20

Wasn't his first wife Sarah CARR.

Deed Mr. Winship and Mr.Redhead  and Mathew Bell Esquire, 4 November 1801
REF: ZCE/B/1/8/4

Ralph Winship for 7 years leases, re: Estate of Sir William Blackett, South side of Combo and part of Caldwell. Date 30 April 1715

Probate papers of Thomas Winship of New Castle Upon Tyne 1860-1874
Ref: NRO 03520/47
Isn't this the son of Robert elder brother of your 3rd Gt Grandfather John.
Might not provide anything useful.

The deeds and leases might though

Thank you once again for your help amondg.  I am going to have a look at those deeds that you have referenced.  Although the Winship name sounds as if it may be fairly uncommon, there seems to be a lot of 'Winships' in the Northumberland and Durham area!

Seems the Winship's left Ulgham after 1800 so could this be Cuthbert and his wife's burials:

Cuthbert Whinship bc.1752 buried 27/12/1816 Stannington, Northumberland
Isabella Winship bc.1758 bur.13/6/1824 Stannington, Northumberland

These 2 are the only Winship events in Stannington and address given as 'Plefsey' (Plessey?) and ages would suggest a husband/wife pairing.

Whilst I can't locate a likely baptism anywhere for Cuthbert there is a baptism of an Isabel Robson (who I note married William Hudspeth in 1786 Ulgham) bp.9/2/1758 Ulgham, dau. of John.
