A very early same sex marriage 1891 in Norfolk
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 16:29 GMT (UK) »
RG12 / piece 1545/ folio 51 / page 10/ schedule 61

1891 Census Station Road, Pulham, Depwade, Norfolk, England.

Head of the household Sophia R(ebecca)  Caton born Shefford Beds, living on own means

May F Molyneux born Surrey - relation to head of household shows as WIFE

Looking at the enumerators sheet May appears to be a governess.

Looks like the enumerator was so used to marking the second person in a household as wife that he  didn't notice his mistake in making May the WIFE of Sophia :)

Or maybe they were accepted in the area like the Ladies of Llangollen (though I think your more prosaic explanation is probably nearer the truth).

Not exactly the same, but at a glance might be mistaken as same sex marriages:

My great grandfather is Alison Appleyard - wife is Ann and married 1878, and his cousin is Allison Appleyard - wife is Annie Elizabeth, married 1870.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.
He/she who never made a mistake, never made anything.
