Betson of Wellingborough
« on: Friday 18 February 22 12:35 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Robert Betson, possibly born about 1820, father is stated as Nathaniel Betson when he marries in 1844. I cannot find anything to confirm the father/son relationship. Would someone put a different father on a marriage?. It doesn't state father deceased! At a loss with this one, any help appreciated.

Hi Kingpins.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

On the Northants Baptism Indexes is only one noted around the time.

Wellingborough C of E
05 01 1828 Joseph to   Nathaniel & Sarah BETSON   of Wych Elms Lane, shoemaker

Sandy

Edited there are a few trees on Ancestry with Robert and wife Mary Ann Bustin, no more info though for Robert. Their marriage was in the Northampton R.D in 1844.

Sandy got here first, however this includes a little more ...

The Northants Baptism Index only shows Joseph Betson s/o Nathaniel shoemaker and Sarah Betson bpt 5 Jan 1828 Wellingborough CofE. No another Betson entry.

The parents marriage ...
Nathaniel Betson shoemaker = Sarah Pomeroy both otp 6 Dec 1818 Wellingborough
... so allows for Robert's birth 1820.
Nathaniel widower married Elizabeth Pendred widow 9 Sep 1831 Wellingborough.

Robert's marriage not listed, but three others ...
1842 James Betson s/o Joseph shoemaker
1845 George Betson s/o Joseph shoemaker
1849 William Betson s/o Nathaniel shoemaker
... all Wellingborough
... no other Betson marriages

Might suggest Robert and William could be found in one of Wellingborough's non-conformist churches (NRO), or just out of county (eg Beds).
Where was Robert's marriage ?

Added ...

The Burial Index shows that Sarah was buried, along with infant Joseph, on 8 Jan 1828 Wellingborough CofE.
Nathaniel buried 16 Jan 1851 Wellingborough CofE.
Almeroth, Germany (probably Hessen). Mawer, Softley, Johnson, Lancaster, Tatum, Bucknall (E.Yorks, Nfk, Lincs)

Thank you all so far, Nathaniels 1st wife Sarah seems to have died along with their son Joseph in 1828.
I have found his 2nd marriage, though if Roberts approx birth is correct Sarah his 1st wife would have to be his mother.
I have found a Robert Betson in the 1841 census with Joseph & Sarah, but also a Nathaniel & Elizabeth (transcribed as Belan) with Ann & Eliza (daughters)
Roberts Marriage was The Register Office Northampton Union.
I am at a loss about whether Robert is Nathaniels son, but dont really understand it if he has put him on his marriage cert.
I also cant find Nathaniel after the 1841 census

The only Robert Betson I can see in 1841 has an age of 25! He is living with Joseph Betson - aged 55, Shoemaker and a James aged 20 - George aged 15 (ages all supposedly rounded down). Living in Wellingborough and all 3 younger men are Shoemakers.

Unfortunately, in 1841 no relationships are shown.

Nathaniel Betson is in Wellingborough also, aged 45 - with a presumed wife Elizabeth and 2 young girls. He is also a Shoemaker.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.
