Huelin Southampton
« on: Saturday 19 February 22 13:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for any information about my ancestors Matthew Huelin and Elisabeth Sivier. Their marriage record (1726, South Stoneham) indicates that they "of Southampton".
Are there any baptismal records, census or other documents available from those years in Southampton?

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you checked www.familysearch.org

A tree on Ancestry has Matthew born in New Zealand - nothing for Elizabeth

Son Guillermo b 1730 Hampshire died 1793 Malaga Spain

To marry in a particular parish you only had to satisfy a 3wk residence condition - you didn’t have to be born there

Thank you all for your guidance. There is a lot of information to look at!
I have a strong suspicion that Matthew was the same person as a Mathieu Huelin born on the island of Jersey in 1702. Apparently this Mathieu left the island and settled in Southampton, where his wife Elisabeth made on his behalf, in 1745, a sale of some of his property in Jersey.
Matthew Huelin's marriage of 1726 is included in the register of the Bishop of Winchester, so I assume he was a parishioner of the Church of England. He does not therefore appear to be a Huguenot Protestant although he may have had family connections with the Huguenots settled in Southampton.
In any case, there must be in some parish or census of inhabitants of Southampton a Huelin-Sivier family having children (at least one, who was my ancestor William) between 1727 and 1745.
Thanks to your suggestion I have looked at the FamilySearch indexes and there are no records of that family (except for their marriage) in them; however, there are numerous parishes in Southampton included in the catalogue. Now I have a place to start!
