Who did Charles Mouldy marry at Hagbourne in 1738?
« on: Saturday 19 February 22 18:22 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if there is a kind soul with access to the Oxon FHS transcription of Hagbourne marriages - or indeed any other resource?

I’m working back from Lucy d/o Charles & Sarah Mouldy bapt at Fawley in 1750.

There appear to be two marriages at Hagbourne on 14 Feb 1738 (sorry,  I don’t know if this is Old Style or New Style)

Charles Green & Sarah Bradfield
Charles Mouldy & Martha Bradfield

This info comes from Family Search and Findmypast (bishop transcript in their new “Berkshire Archives” collection)

However, there is a corresponding Sarum marriage licence for Charles Mouldy & Sarah Bradfield.

Does the parish register confirm this pair? I suspect (hope!) the BT has mixed the couples up, and Family Search has used that source.

Hi Steve,
The Hagbourne records do indeed record two marriages
on 14-2-1738;
 Charles Mouldy - Martha Bradfield and
 Charles Green - Sarah Bradfield

The marriage licence records;
Charles Mouldy, of Bricolton [sic] to Sarah Bradfield, Harwell, Berks
B/Men; John Cherington, Hagbourne, Berks & Jonathon Bosly, Hagbourne
Dated; Hagbourne 14-2-1738

There are  14 x "Mouldy" baptisms in Fawley   1740 - 1759  with parents Charles & Sarah and also
8x burials 1744- 1788. Sarah Mouldy bur. 28-12-1753

I also looked at Harwell and whilst there are some "Bradfield" baptisms I could not see a Sarah entry.

If I can help more please say.

Many thanks Alan,

Just to confirm, your information is from a transcript of the actual register, rather than the BT?

Yes, I had the licence details from Findmypast. Even with my best Berkshire accent I’m finding it hard to make “Bricolton” sound like Brightwalton  (where Charles Mouldy was baptised).

I too found no trace of Sarah in Harwell. However, it appears the two Bradfield girls were sisters from Hagbourne.
22 Mar 1716 Martha d/o Richard & Elizabeth Bradfield
19 Mar 1719 Sarah d/o Richard & Elizabeth Bradfield

I think there has been a mix up by whoever wrote up the register/BT. Although, it would be good to find some Green baptisms with Charles and Martha as parents, but they seem to disappear after wedding day.

Hi Steve,

Yes - transcriptions done in 1993 & issued by the Oxon FHS.

I meant to add  in my reply, that as there could be an error when the registers were transcribed that a call (email) to the Berks Records Office, Reading (as I believe they hold the originals) might be able to answer your enquiry as to whether the names have been reversed.

That is the old pronunciation of Brightwalton, and the way my grandmother used to say it.
