I've attempted the one of your great grandfather, as others have said the surface is badly damaged

Hi Trishanne & Gadget,
Thank you both for your improved copies of Jane and Alfred even blurry it is still clearer than the original photo of Alfred. It is amazing to me how you can clarify the originals so well. Thank you so much for your time and skills.
Does anyone have any idea what Jane is holding in the original photo in her hand?
Best wishes
Jenny

Hi Jenny

I've puzzled about that!  She's definitely holding something or it could be something small and there is something unconnected on the furniture.

I've so far come up with
a small  clutch bag
a cloak
a musical instrument

It's sunny and reasonably warm up here so I'm off out foe a while but I hope to have a go at the gentleman later today.

Regards

I've just done a screen grab of the relevant part of your original and adjusted it. It looks as if it's a carving - could she be just holding the back of a chair  :-\

I think that, apart from Pat, we have interpreted the marks on the skirt as surface marks, Could you scan that portion of the image at a very high resolution or maybe look at the surface of the photo to see if the marks are on the surface or in the image.

PS - was she a horsewoman?

The cane looks quite rigid, I wonder if it's a version of this:
