Yes, I know that. And cladach is also a beach, but a more stony one.

Just trying to ensure that those with no knowledge of Gaelic don't let the names confuse them :)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Monica, are the above deaths for an Archibald, you didn't add names  ;D

Bad shorthand! Yes, both deaths are for an Archibald McMillan in 1858 in Killean.

Wow - have come back to so many replies!

Forfarian - Archibald's death was registered by his son Hugh.

Rosinish - Details on the certificate are: Agricultural Labourer, Widower. Beachmenach. Parents - Hugh McMillan, Agricultural Labourer and Mary McMillan ms McMillan. Cause - (said to be) Consumption about 6 months. Buried at Killean churchyard as certified by son Hugh. Informant - Hugh McMillan son, present.

MonicaL - Thanks so much for all of the searching there! I have checked the 1861 census and there is an Archibald McMillan, living at Taychroman.

This is the same Archibald McMillan (though there seems to be some discrepancy in age) as the one in 1861, living at Taychroman still with his brother in 1841
Surname   Forenames   Sex   Age   Occupation   Birth County   Notes
MCMILLAN   Archd   M   35   Farmer   Argyllshire
MCMILLAN   Dond.   M   35      Argyllshire
MCMILLAN   Maysie   F   14      Argyllshire
MCKEICH   Archd   M   13      Argyllshire
MCMILLAN   Mary   F   50   Female Servant   Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY   Mal.   M   14      Argyllshire

And then this is the same Archibald in 1851
Archd Mcmillan, 59, 1792
Relationship:   Head
Gender:   Male
Where Born:   Killean, Argyll
Address:   Faychroman
Occupation:   Farmer
Household Members:
Name   Age
Archd Mcmillan   59
Donald Mcmillan   50
Jean Mcmillan   24
Mary Mcmillan   8
Alexr Mcmillan   4
Jean Mcmillan   2
Duncan Mcmillan   6 Mo
James Falkirk   15
Dond Wallson   20
May Mcconachy   21
Archd Wallace   24

1841   Argyllshire (ARL)   Killean & Kilchenzie   Killean   519   2   9      Beachmenach
Surname   Forenames   Sex   Age   Occupation   Birth County   Notes
MCMULLAN   Archd   M   35   Farmer   Argyllshire
MCMULLAN   Catherine   F   15      Argyllshire
MCMULLAN   Mary   F   14      Argyllshire
MCMULLAN   Agnes   F   11      Argyllshire
MCMULLAN   Maysie   F   8      Argyllshire
MCMULLAN   Hugh   M   3      Argyllshire

And this is the one who died in 1858, in 1841. The name Maysie/Mysie/Magsie seems to crop up within the two households as well. I just maybe have to find the death for the Archibald McMillan living with his brother Donald.

Having compared all of those census returns and noting that Donald's eldest son was called Alexander I dug around on ScotlandsPeople and found -

MCMILLAN ARCHIBALD/ALEXANDER MCMILLAN/M/27/11/1793/Killean and Kilchenzie
MCMILLAN DONALD/ALEXANDER MCMILLAN/M/03/11/1799/Killean and Kilchenzie

So perhaps no connection there.

My theory is, and it may be a stretch. That Hugh McMillan married Elizabeth/Betsey McMillan and they had issue - Mary 1779-1856, John 1784, Margaret 1786, Iver 1789, Catherine 1791, Florence 1796. Then, Elizabeth dies, and Hugh marries Mary McMillan on 3rd Apr 1800 and had issue - Archibald 1801-1858, Janet 1802-1881, Elizabeth 1804, Hugh 1807-1872, & John 1812.

The variants are normally associated with the name Margaret www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=mysie

Do you know where daughter Florence was born in 1796? I just wondered if it could match the place given for the same/other Hugh McMillan's residence in 1799 when he married Mary McMillan and he showed as resident of Culfuar.

Have you found Mary in 1841 and 1851?
