William Johnstone of Belfast but born Armagh c.1877
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 17:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi this is the only line of my family tree which I am stuck with. My G-G-Grandfather was William Johnston who spent his adult life in Belfast and raised his family there. He wed in 1900 in Belfast and lived there for the 1901 and 1911 censuses with his wife and children. In the censuses he gives his birthplace as Co Armagh but I cannot locate his birth. In his wedding cert he gives his father as John Johnston a 'Feuter' or 'Leuter' = I've probably misunderstood the handwriting so have attached a snip of it

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Occupation is probably “tenter” which is a part of the weaving and cloth making industry:

Thank you both, I wouldn't have worked that out...

So I need a John Johnston, a tenter, who had a son called William johnston in Co Armagh in 1877

Maybe or maybe not. It was William who said in 1900 that his father's occupation was 'tenter' but other records might list him as 'labourer' or something different.

For reference-
marriage of William Johnston & Anna Kirkpatrick (1900 Belfast)-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
