Maud Scott-Masseuse 1917
« on: Monday 21 February 22 10:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi all this is a tricky one so im hoping some kind person can work this out for me as its driving me nuts.
I have the birth certificate below of a Helmar Bergman Scott, born in 1917 (illigitimate) in Blackley Manchester.
His mother was Maud Scott and the father was a Oscar Bergman, who was Swedish. Oscar came over to England during WW1 and worked at the Army military hospital in Baschurch Shropshire. The hospital was started by Dame Agnes Hunt and it was the first of its kind to offer the 'Swedish Drill' which we know today as physiotherapy. Maud Scott was a masseuse at the same place. Maud gave the child to a couple called Sarah and John Barkley sometime between 1917 and 1921 as he is on the 1921 census aged 4 with them. The 1921 census also states that Helmars father is dead. What i am looking for is who was Maud Scott, (or even Oscar Bergman if im really lucky lol)  i know nothing about her at all, maybe if i can find Maude i can find some info about Oscar Bergman the father x
Thank you all in advance.

So Maud returned to Shropshire with the baby.  There is a marriage in 1918 in Shropshire for a Maud M A Scott to John Smith

Hi Carole
Yes it appears she went back to Shropshire after having the baby and gave him up to the Barkleys. If she was still working at the hospital at that time as a masseuse it would make sense to do that i suppose.

This article seems to suggest the hospital was only opened in 1921 & then later became the orthopedic hospital.

Going back to the 1918 marriage.  I can only find 2 birth registrations for a Maud M A Scott

Maud Mary Ann 1892 Rochford  mmn McLean- parents Charles George & Janet Elizabeth
Maud Mary Annie 1894 Holborn mmn  Young - ??

Hi CaroleW
Im not sure how to do lincs onto different pages, but Agnes Hunt started the hospital in 1900 from her own home in Baschurch Shropshire (Florence House), in 1907 they built the first operating theatre, in her shed, and introduced Xrays in 1913. During WW1 it was used as a physiotherapy hospital for wounded soldiers, which is where Maud Scott and Oscar Bergman came in.

May be worth contacting Shropshire FHS to see if any civilian records exist for the hospital.
