Do you have any records though for Oscar?
His name is crossed through on the birth certificate. :-\

It does seem plausible that the Baschurch hospital is the link  as the child lived in the area in 1921 although as the child was born in Heaton Park that could also be the link.

Heywood
I dont have anything for him sorry, except his name on the birth certificate he was obviously still alive in 1916 as he conceived the baby with Maud Scott but the 1921 census states he had died, its possible i suppose that Maud Scott  told John and Sarah Barkley when she gave the baby over, that father had died, but he was actually still alive, but i cant find any evidence unfortunately x

Thanks.
These are just some thoughts.

Oscar’s name is crossed through so he might not have been around at the time of registration.
Although, you would think that the child’s name Helmer would have some significance.
With regard to Oscar, he could have any occupation though?

Another reference to Heaton Park
‘20 masseuses working at the Heaton Park Command  Centre treated 4,000 soldiers in one year.’

Does 1921 census state Helmer’s mother is alive?

Thanks.

So… could Maud have worked and had her baby in Manchester.
She then moved to Baschurch, perhaps for similar employment and in 1921 (certainly) her child was boarding with a local family.

You write about her ‘moving back’ to Baschurch. Is this supposition or do you have any details re Maud’s origins or her whereabouts after 1917?

Did Helmar stay with the Barkleys until he reached adulthood?

Hayworth, thanks for your help.
Helmar wrote his life story in a book before he died but sadly didnt get to see it published. Some info about his early life is below:

That is interesting - many thanks.

You would think that there would be something in the local newspapers at the time.
I see there are several articles and reports for the later years.

Added
I have tried to find any other reports but not much success. It seems that ’Swedish drill’ was a popular form of exercise in various establishments since 19th century.

It is a pity that there isn’t a better address on the birth certificate. One can only presume that it refers to an establishment in the park - the convalescent home so is that a coincidence?

I assume that Helmar would have been told that information by the Barkleys as he doesn’t mention recalling his mother.
