Clara Annie Sutherland and William Thompson
« on: Monday 21 February 22 14:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I've got Clara Annie Sutherland, widow,  age 44 born Newcastle NBL living with widower William Thompson b. 1859 Bp Auckland, in Leeds 1911 : she is listed as servant. She dies later that year.

However, in Leeds infirmary 1901 there is a Clara Annie THOMPSON married 35 born Newcastle as a patient. This seems a bit of a coincidence to me. William is in Leeds 1901 as a widower. He is my gtgtuncle.

I think Clara Annie may be nee LISTER and married Thomas Frederick Sutherland b. 1864, in Newcastle in 1885. The last sighting seems to be the bankruptcy of T.F. Sutherland in 1887, he was a shoemaker in Walker. I cannot find Clara or Thos Fred Sutherland in 1891 .Was he in jail? Did they change their names?

William was still married in 1891  and lived with wife and family in Bp. Auckland DUR, where he was a musical director for the local theatre (under the management of Stan Laurel's father:)). I do not know when William's wife, Mary Eleanor THOMPSON nee ROWELL died as there are too many possibles.

Can anyone find out any more?

There is a burial record transcript on Durham Records online at Princess Road Cemetery, Seaham  on 14 Mar 1894 which is a match for age at death and husband's name:

Mary Eleanor Thompson, age 33, wife of William Thompson

A free (advanced) search of the 1921 census for  William Thompson, b 1859, birthplace Bishop Auckland only brings up 1 result, in Holbeck, Yorkshire.

Hovering over the image icon shows only his name and no other occupants, so either he was living alone or he's in some sort of institution?

Hi Boo,
That looks possible for the death. All their children were born Seaham, so there's a link. I need to check where her parents/siblings were in case she stayed with them.

William on the 1921 is a widowed retired boot repairer of the right age and birthplace to be mine , he is in a poor house as inmate in Leeds.
