MacDonald Family, possible connection to Loup?
« on: Monday 28 February 22 03:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am actively researching my branch of the MacDonalds with hopes of verifying some information about my descent. Here is the line of descent I have the highest confidence about:

Duncan (fl. 1663, Glasgow)
John I (b. 1663, Glasgow)
John II (b. 1691, Aberdeen)
Ronald (b. 1719, Glasgow)
Archibald I (b. 1749, Glasgow)
Archibald II (b. 1782, Rutherglen)
John III (b. 1807, Kilwinning)
James Ewing (b. 1843, Kilwinning)
Robert Burn (b. 1874, Pittston, PA)
James Watson (b. 1898, Pittston, PA)
My Grandfather
My Father

I've been doing most of my research on the earlier generations through Ancestry. Through other member's trees, I've discovered a tenuous line back to Donald Eponymous Mac Ranald by way of Alastair Mor and the MacDonalds of Loup, particularly Clan Ian Ruadh. I've had a hard time verifying this line until recently, but I don't feel I have enough information to make the link.

Does anyone have information about that branch so I can make some comparisons? I have a Y-DNA test I am waiting on, but having a paper trail would be wonderful.

Thank you!

That matches with my own research. What I've been struggling with is finding reliable sources for the preceding generations. Some other Ancestry members seem to claim Duncan as either the grandson or great grandson of Ian Ruadh Macdonald from Knoydart. Until recently, I wasn't aware of any outside evidence until I found this post:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=434075.18
And this document:
https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/4145605/person/292007946656/media/7324dd43-4f2e-4e2b-a1d2-5b0170f29f03?_phsrc=Eon2149&usePUBJs=true

I think the Duncan in the latter document could be the father of my Duncan. That would make the full line of descent:

Donald Eponymous
Alastair Mor
Hector Ard
Hector Or
Charles
Ewen
Angus Buidhe
Neil
Ian Ruadh (of Knoydart, ancestor to a branch that emigrated to Glengarry, Ontario)
Ruari
Duncan and Catherine Williams (I've not found hard evidence for this)
Duncan and Jonat Stotard
John and Isobel Coulter
And so forth.
