There is a burial record for an Ann Aplin, aged 87 in 1870 at Broadwindsor, Dorset. Burial date 19 April 1870.

If that is the correct Ann -- she lived to a really good age, despite being described as a 'bad woman'!!

Image on ancestry.
Abode is “Netherhay”.  Same as In 1861 with Robert & Joan

Nice work everyone and thanks for the time you've spent looking! :)

It has become a bit clearer then. So, she was never married and simply had children with various men. Her surname/maiden name must be Aplin then.

I admit I'm regretting researching this part of my tree. Doesn't feel nice to know I'm related to them. At least it's quite far back.

There's a hint on Ancestry that Ann's parents are William Aplin and Susannah Bowditch. I suppose I should check that out.

Hi, according to this transcript he was born 1824 and baptised 1833.

Interesting that there are 2 possible baptism records then. That's probably the right one given the location, although odd that the other one should mention he's illegitimate.

So, she was never married and simply had children with various men.

That description of mum Ann as "Bad Woman" covers a multitude of sins. It's like she was bestowed her own "unique" occupation, according to her daughter's 1813 baptism record.
