Thinking ~

They might not have been wearing the most fashionable clothes so it could have been later. Is there anything on the back that might help? If so could you scan it, please?

Hi Popeye, if you have the original of Henry and Elizabeth could you please post a scan of the back as it helps with dating. It's alway a good idea to post the whole photo including the mount if there is one.

Just adding a thought ..
In the first photo, is the man wearing a Newgate fringe beard, or does he have a double chin? Photo is not clear enough for me to know.
If it is a beard, would it not give a date no later than 1870?

I see it as a double chin with side burns but could be.  My original dating was 1870-1880s  but also allowing  for older people not dressing in the height of fashion.

Jim has suggested that some men continued to wear the beard all their lives.

Quote
This one about the same date as the other. The Newgate Frill was popular during the 1860's,however some men kept these all their lives. His hairstyle long at the sides is also an 1860's style.

Thanks for the wonderful replies.  I do not have the original photo and have no idea where it might be.  This photo is a copy that was with a box of photos belonging to my Grandmother.  Gadget:  The dates for Janet are Born in 1859 and she died in 1943.  Her mother Elizabeth was born in 1838 and she died in 1922.   This is why I am wondering if it could be an image of Janet's Grandparents who both died in 1861 and 1863 respectively.  The lady in the photo could still be Elizabeth and she may have worn clothing that was deemed out of fashion for purely practical reasons.  They were a farming family from a small community in the upper Hunter Valley of NSW.  There is a fellow I intend to visit who might know but he lives some 7 hours away from me.
