Probability tool, Ancestry
« on: Friday 04 March 22 12:24 GMT (UK) »

Reading an article about DNA, the author highly recommended using the Probability Tool on Ancestry,  Try as I have I cannot find it.

Can anybody tell me about it and hopefully point me in the right direction,
     Thanks
Suzanne

I don't know if this is it, but maybe it refers to the probability of the relationship between 2 people being (for example) 2nd cousin, or 3rd cousin, based on their shared DNA?

In which case, bring up your list of DNA matches and click on the suggested relationship between you and them (a link to the right of their name, where - eg -it says something like:

2nd cousin
310cM/4% shared DNA
Father's side

Clicking on this will then giveyou a chart listing the likelihood of different degrees of relationship between you and the person --- so for this link on my results, there's a 53% chance of us being:
                                                                                                                                                       1st cousin 1x removed
half 1st cousin
2nd great-grandparent
2nd great-grandchild
great-grandaunt/granduncle
great-grandniece/grandnephew
half grandaunt/granduncle
half grandniece/grandnephew

then a 44% chance of other relationships, then much smaller % figures of still other relationships.

(apologies for the squiffy formatting above!)

If you get up your list of shared matches, you can click on the amount of shared DNA (in blue) this will bring up a popup which shows the probability of your match being of various relationships.  It's similar to Painter:
  https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4

Add - sorry Annie, I think I've described the same facility as you.

Thank you both.   Got it  ;D.    The article was by Michelle Leonard,  Genes & Geneaology 2022.

Quote "  Don't forget Ancestry now have a probability tool of their own so if researching matches on there you can consult that as well as shared CM, plus Thrulines, Common Ancestor hints and Theory of Family Relativity Hints'

Thank you both and on to the next brick wall  ;D
