The mystery of Venus Hills
« on: Saturday 05 March 22 16:39 GMT (UK) »
Having traced my ancestors back to James Hills (b. 1788, St Nicholas Plumstead) I am trying to identify more details about his parents Richard & Winifred Hills.

They had a number of children baptised at St Nicholas and nearby the nearby East Wickham chapelry a place that serves a very small community
I can see death records for both Richard and Winifred at East Wickham (Richard 1819 with age of 74, Winnifrid 1829 with unusually no age given in register) but no marriage records anywhere that don't clearly relate to different people(e.g. there are records for a Richard and Winnifrid Hills in Lympne on the south coast of Kent around the same time but they have birth and death dates in Lympne and a distinct set of children as well)
Particularly strange is that the first child of Richard Hills, Christiana (born 15th December 1776 at East Wickham) has the mother named as Venus Hills, one page later in January 1779 Richard junior is baptised with the mother's name as Winifrid.

Venus seems to be quite an unusual christian name in England at that time and the only other record for a Venus Hill I can find is on a Dominica slavery record of 1823 as purchasing her own son's freedom and presumably not the same person at all.

I can't find a death recorded for Venus, or a marriage with Richard so I'm wondering if Venus and Winifred are the same person and having apparently exhausted b/m/d data and having no further contextual clues I'm looking for any other sources there might be to yield some hints.

Any bright ideas?

Hi,

Have you seen the actual register entry for Christiana's baptism?  All I can find online is the index of entries and I'm wondering if the original register shows a different mother's name than Venus.

Doesn't that mean that Christiana 1776, Richard 1779 at East Wickham, James 1782 and Anne 1784 at Plumstead are a different family or did Richard marry twice?

Richard and Winifred 1785 had
Marianne/ Mary Ann 1788 East Wickham
Susannah 1789 Lympne
William 1791 East Wickham
Maria 1796 East Wickham
------------------------
Prior to that are:

Christiana 1776 East Wickham
Richard 1779 East Wickham
James 1782 Plumstead
Anne 1784 Plumstead

The people at Lympne seem quite distinct. Fairly obvious birth and death dates for them and children down there.

For Richard & Winifred at Plumstead East Wickham I have children:

Christiana 1776 (very clearly attributed to Richard and Venus Hills in Rev Henry Kipling 's clear handwriting.)
Richard 1779 (Winifred as are all the others)
James 1782
Anne 1784
Mary Anne 1788
Wiliam 1791
Eleanor 1793
Maria 1796

Richard, Winifred and Christiana all sign as witnesses to Richard Jr's marriage in East Wickham in 1801

Richard Hills Sr death at East Wickham at age 74 in 1819
Winifred Hills death at East Wickham 1829 (no age written unlike literally every other entry!)

The Winifred Hills in Lympne dies down there in 1797
