As you get older your finger dexterity decreases, especially if you suffer injuries in work or war, so marking with an "X" in your later years doesn't rule out the person could sign with a full signature when they were younger.

Yes, I've seen that before that younger men sign nicely but at a later date sign with an X (old age or perhaps laziness).

In this case William Young signed nicely in 1765 and again in 1793 (At Chas Boulding's wedding). The wedding of William Young & Catherine was in 1771 which is a good match for location and date but signed with a shakey X. I don't think this is "my" William.
