Bailey's of Bilston - Marriage
« on: Saturday 03 September 05 17:44 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a brick wall Ive hit in my family history? I cant find a marriage record for Thomas Bailey and Ann. Thomas Bailey, according to census details was born in Bilston c1798 and Ann was born in Bilston c1807.

In 1851 they were living in Wolverhampton Street and had children Mary b.1825, Elizabeth b.1840, Nathaniel b.1847, Thomas b.1838, Joseph b.1849 and Samuel b.1832.

There are strong links with the Bailey family to Dawley/Wellington in what is now Telford. Thomas & Ann's son, William Bailey was living in Dawley from c1871 aged 18, and Samuel was born in Salop in 1832. I believe Thomas Bailey may have had a brother, William Bailey b.1797 Wellington, as the 1871 census for Dawley shows William b.1852 Bilston living with his uncle, William Bailey b.1797 Wellington.

Im not entirely convinced that Thomas Bailey was born in Bilston although the census records suggest this. I know it was usual for a couple to marry in the brides home town/village, so I assume Ann was from Bilston and married in that area. I think its a possibility that Thomas Bailey may have been born in Dawley/Wellington, but following his marriage reported as being born in Bilston on census returns.

I dont know the area at all, so if anyone could provide any help or advice id be really grateful!

Hi JTL

Thanks for the offer. I have the family for the 1861 census living at Black House? Yard in Bilston. Is this the same family you were refering to?

I was hoping to find a marriage record, or a census return pre 1851 for them which might provide some small clue, in order to try and find out who Thomas's parents were. Ive found records, anyone of which could possibly be the right one, but no other evidence to narrow the options down.

Do you have any idea where they may have married if they were living in Bilston?
Best wishes
Ali

hi there. I think that your people may have married in possibly St Leonards Bilston or St Peters Wolverhampton. Have a look on Wolverhampton Archives site as they do have some  records on line. Also the  staff are most helpful.
