I am trying to find where Roman Catholics would have been buried in the Rothbury area in the 1840s and 1850s. All help gratefully accepted.

Not looked at the lists, but maybe there is something here that may help?

No I've just done a search and there doesn't appear to be anything in the right time frame/area. Sorry.

Woodhorn user guides don't seem to have specific churchyards/ funeral registers for RC in the Rothbury area, not sure if that means there are none or if they have just not been deposited. I suspect that in the time frame you are talking about the local anglican churchyard may be where they were buried.

Is there anything on FreeReg for the names you are after?

Hi Boo, thank you for replying.

I didn't know about the NDFHS database (and I've been a member of NDFHS for over 20 years! -- every day a learning day), thanks for checking it as well.

I've looked at FreeReg but drew a blank. Distant ancestor (CofE) married a RC, children baptised as RC but I haven't yet looked at the children to see where they married etc.

Can't see anything on FindMyPast for CofE burials, might have to look at Woodhorn.

In the absence of any Roman Catholic burial grounds in the immediate area my first thought would be the same as Boo, i.e. that they were buried in the nearest Anglican churchyard.

Well I got very excited when I saw it was an NDFHS database cos I do love a nice shiny new database to firkle round and I (erroneously) assumed that it related to Northumberland and Durham, but on checking it out there were very few from Northumberland and lots from counties elsewhere in the country. I've bookmarked it though, you never know when these random databases will come in handy :-)

There is the Catholic Church at Thropton with its small burial ground.

Some grave info here;

Not sure if that helps you at all.

P
Northumberland; Johnson, Johnston, Dodds, Rutherford, Gray, Kennedy, Wilson, Sanderson, Davidson and other Border Marauders as they are discovered on this journey.
Berkshire; Knight, Bristor, Sharpe, Sharp, Ashley.
Suffolk / Essex; Perce, Pearce, Pearse, Pierce, Hayes.
Midlands; Hodgetts, Parker, Easthope.

Thanks P, This is where some of my distant ancestors were baptised, unfortunately the family name isn't listed on FindAGrave. I'll have to try Woodhorn.

In Rothbury itself there is the C of E churchyard (All Saints), Haw Hill Burial Ground which is used as All Saints extension. A civil cemetery known as Whitton Bank Cemetery, records held by Northumberland Archives but only from 1896 -- possible when it opened. I am looking for deaths pre 1896.
