Yes I thought the same as you about being a reserve….So if William was home with Ellen since 1887, was he Abel with Ellen on the 1891 census? I need to prove there is no record  for a William Thompson with Ellen from 1887 onwards…

Oh dear - look at this.

I was just checking yet again for clues.

Besides ‘William Thompson’ from Clavering there is this record on Fold3
Nathan Law 18yrs Clavering
Enlistment 1881
Bedfordshire Regiment 2483

Abel’s brother Nathan was at home in 1881 aged 13 yrs so it can’t be him.

I can’t see the record on Find my Past
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

LAW’S were a big family, who had come from Clavering for generations, or surrounding areas as they were all small hamlets within walking distant of each other…And then the families interbred with each other, resulting in loads of kids being born same years, same names, it’s been a nightmare, that’s why my tree is so big as I’ve added every Law member I’ve found….Even my grandparents were first cousins…

I got a response from the forces page…I gave a few facts about Abel/William…The person said back in those days men used to serve all of Ireland like they would do in England, and they would give any name and date of birth and nothing was verified… So they think as Abel/William have so many similarities they could possibly be the same person
